How many classes are in ArcheAge Chronicles?

The Steam demo has four classes, each with two weapons (8 weapons in total), and XLGAMES says all four are playable with two of their weapons each. The Warrior fights in melee with a longsword built around parrying or a heavy greatsword. The Ranger uses close-range hatchets or a longbow. The Mage casts fire and lightning with an elemental staff or freezes enemies in melee with a wavesword. The Berserker charges with an axe and shield or bursts with a warhammer. Progression is per weapon: each weapon has its own trait tree fed by Raeven's Coilstones. Classes are gender-locked, and XLGAMES says that stays at Early Access. Demo characters don't carry over, so the demo is the place to try them all.
  • Warrior: Longsword, Greatsword
  • Ranger: Hatchet, Longbow
  • Mage: Elemental Staff, Wavesword
  • Berserker: Axe and Shield, Warhammer
  • One trait tree per weapon
  • Gender-locked (official)

The four demo classes

Warrior

Official

Frontline melee

Stands in front and trades blows. The longsword leans on parries and counters; the greatsword trades defense for big, armor-breaking hits.

Ranged and skirmisher

Two very different kits: hatchets for close, storm-charged combos and dodges, the longbow for marking and shooting from range.

How to choose

  • Want to block and parry? Warrior with the longsword — XLGAMES' own PvP footage shows longsword parries reflecting ranged attacks.
  • Want range? Ranger's longbow or Mage's elemental staff.
  • Want fast melee combos? Ranger's hatchets (dodges, counters, storm attacks) or Mage's wavesword.
  • Want big hits? Warrior's greatsword or Berserker's warhammer.
  • Want to be hard to kill in melee? Berserker's axe and shield.

What the labels mean

Official = XLGAMES said it in a Steam post or on the store page. Press = reported by games press from previews or developer videos. Community = listed by fan sites; we show it because players ask, but it may change. We re-check everything against the demo on October 19 and update this page daily during the demo.

No tier list yet

Nobody outside XLGAMES has played more than a six-hour network test. We'll publish a tier list only once demo players have real data — not before.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best class in ArcheAge Chronicles?+

There is no reliable ranking yet — the demo is the first broad test. Pick by the weapon style you enjoy; you can try all four in the demo.

Are classes gender-locked?+

Yes. XLGAMES confirmed gender-locked classes will remain at Early Access; its October 21 post lists removing gender locks among the plans after that. Which gender goes with which class comes from community reports.

Can you switch weapons?+

Each class has two weapons in the demo, each with its own trait tree. How freely you swap mid-fight will be clearer once the demo is live.

Will more classes come later?+

XLGAMES hasn't announced classes beyond the four in the demo, but its October 21 post plans more weapon variety; press reports a third weapon per class is in development.
